When CSV Export Beats Waiting for a Shopify App Install

A pragmatic take on direct sync roadmaps versus the boring workflow that already ships catalogs this week.

Direct store sync sounds modern. CSV import sounds like 2014. Merchants still ship millions of dollars of catalog updates through CSV because it is auditable, reversible, and does not require granting another app write scope on a production shop.

If you are localizing a seasonal drop, speed-to-publish matters more than elegant OAuth. Export a Shopify-ready file, import, spot-check five SKUs, done. Keep the app waitlist for when you need continuous sync across hundreds of weekly edits.

The trap is pretending the waitlist is the product. Until push is live, your export must be excellent: columns mapped, encodings clean, metafields documented. That unglamorous work is what makes “coming soon” tolerable.

Use direct sync when your ops cadence demands it. Until then, a reliable CSV path is not a compromise — it is a release strategy.
